Welcome Rev. Dawn Ingram:
We have a new permanent minister! The Reverend Dawn Ingram and her husband, David, came to us from St. Louis, Missouri. They have been married for 33 years and have an adult son, Joshua, who lives and works in St. Louis. They made the move to the parsonage last weekend. Dawn and David served together as missionaries in Africa, Europe, and the USA for 20 years with the Covenant Players, an international non-profit, ecumenical Christian drama ministry.
Dawn brings a wealth of life experiences to VSCC as well as energy, enthusiasm, personality and sense of humor. We look forward to welcoming Dawn and David to VSCC and learning about them and beginning ministry together. WELCOME DAWN AND DAVID!"

DIVINE DINING: The next round of this enjoyable dining experience is forming. If you would like to gather with 5-8 other people outside of church and share a meal, often in someone's home, let us know. Write "Divine Dining" on the pew pad, call the office, or talk with Carol Huffman.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: A new Prayer Shawl Ministry group has been formed for the month of February. Intercessory prayers are said for the recipients of the prayer shawls as the shawls are knit and crocheted, and then the shawls are blessed when they are completed. Prayer shawl makers will meet at the church from 10:00 - 12:00 on the following Thursday mornings: February 9, 16, 23. The completed shawls will remain at the church, and they will be distributed to people in need of spiritual comfort. Patterns will be provided. Please contact Shirley Edwards (217/543-5154) to obtain information about the size of needles and amount of yarn needed for each shawl. If desired, CWF will reimburse shawl makers for the cost of the yarn if receipts are submitted. Knitting and crochet instructors will be available, and beginners are welcome.

ESTLINE CROWE'S 80TH BIRTHDAY PARTY: We have been invited to celebrate Estline Crowe's 80th Birthday Party! An Open House will be held at the Community Center on Saturday, February 11, from 2:00 - 5:00 PM. The family invites us to send cards if we are unable to attend.
PARTNERS IN PRAISE: The next Partners in Praise service will occur Sunday night, March 11, at Arthur United Methodist Church. The service will begin at 5:00 PM, followed by a light meal. Rehearsals will be held at AUMC on February 22, 29, and March 7 on the following schedule: Pre-school through 6th grade - 5:00 PM; Junior High/High School - 6:30 PM; Adult Choir - 7:00 PM. Singers and musicians will gather for a quick run-through of the program at 4:30 PM on March 11.

FEBRUARY 14 CHOCOLATE POTLUCK: Everyone is invited to a Chocolate Potluck at the parsonage on February 14, from 7:00 - 9:00 PM. The folks in this church are sweethearts, and this is an opportunity to fellowship with all of the other sweethearts in the VSCC family. Bring a chocolate dish to contribute if you can, but come anyway if you can't. Sugar free and non-chocolate foods will be available for those with dietary concerns. Please RSVP to the church office (543-2292), Dawn's e-mail (discipledawn0701@yahoo.com), or write "Feb. 14" on the pew pad.

ART GROUP FORMING: Please contact the church office if you are interested in participating in an Art Coordination Committee at the church. This committee will consider the development and use of art in areas other than the Education Wing and develop a decorating plan to submit to the Board.

LOSE, LOVE, LIVE will meet at 3:00 PM today at the parsonage, in order to accommodate those who desire to watch the Super Bowl tonight.

VINE STREET CHRISTIAN CHURCH
is now on Facebook.
My husband and I were in one of the hundreds of cars stopped on I-70 East during a recent ice storm. Seven trucks had jackknifed between us and Vandalia, and police were in the process of clearing the roads. As the roads were cleared, cars would be allowed to proceed - one at a time. And that's what happened. Little by little, we were permitted to drive and exit at Vandalia. Thankfully, Highway 40 was in good shape, and we reached Arthur without incident.

In the five hours that we were stopped on the interstate, a temporary community developed. Drivers conferred with each other about what might be happening. Truckers offered the warmth of their cabs to folks who didn't have adequate heat in their cars. Food and water were provided to families who didn't anticipate the long delay. Dogs were exercised and petted by neighboring passengers. The bad conditions brought out the best in people, and the light of kindness shined in the darkness.

On that night, I watched God's love unfold around me. Strangers, traveling on the same road for different reasons, helped each other in the darkness and cold. Instead of focusing on their own misery, fellow travelers looked for ways to help their neighbors. In the midst of the icy weather on that treacherous road, God's love warmed the night.
As we travel down life's road, let us look for ways to help others and create an oasis where divine love thrives, regardless of life's storms.
